Fabian Perez’s works are held together by themes of love, passion, secrets and desires. He also loves to celebrate romantic and seductive rituals, the nature of performance, and the emotional effects of body language. It is hardly surprising that some of his best-known – and best-loved – artworks are from his Dancers series.
Featuring bold personalities, theatrical lighting and achingly evocative dance moves, this series continues to draw fans and existing collectors seeking to buy a Fabian Perez artwork that epitomises his artwork and ethos.
Tango’s Seductive Expression
Known for romance that imbues his artworks, Fabian does not hold back when painting his tango pieces. Each one captures a single breath held in a passionate routine, with strong compositional shapes blocking in highlights and shadows, providing precise structure to each pose. The deep shadows that characterise much of Fabian’s work are particularly effective here, as they delineate the lines of the dancer’s bodies, particularly when torsos or hands are pressed together.
The Argentine tango is known for what is called its ‘close embrace’ style, as well as its encouragement of emotive expression which contrasts with many more conservative ballroom styles. Fabian’s tango works perfectly capture the way in which the dancers press together, with many tango works focusing on the contact between the two dancers and the romance it evokes. For sheer drama, however, we have to look at the striking poses that he captures in some of his best-known tango works, with deep dips or lifts holding the viewer spellbound.
Flamenco’s Grace and Rhythm
Fabian’s flamenco works are created as single portraits, each one focusing on a single dancer. Fabian uses many of the techniques that his portraiture is known for as he captures the personality and movement of the dancers. Some face away from the viewer, drawn under a shade of mystery, while others make eye contact that is seductive, aloof, or challenging by turns.
These works are often full-length, similar to the tango works, so the viewer can see the lines of the dancer from head to toe. However, many of them are three-quarter or half-portraits, focusing on the hips, torso and shoulders. With Fabian’s sharp lighting in play, this draws attention to the shoulders, arms and hands, which perform the graceful and flowing movements which contrast with the rapid movement of the feet, or ‘zapateado.’
Lighting and Backdrops
Fabian’s figurative works do not always include detailed backgrounds, but his dancer works especially do not tend to have much drawing attention from the central figures. The dancers are often caught in strong light, suggesting an overhead spotlight, with the rest of the scene in shadow.
If there is a background, it is often created with little contrast, figures falling into shadow so as to create a backdrop to the dancers. Always playing with fascinating lighting effects, Fabian often uses a diffused light in these works, which floods out to create a halo of colour, perhaps deep red or blue, around the dancer or dancers.
