Legendary comic book artist Stan Lee’s (b.1922) iconic, yet flawed, superheroes revolutionised the comic book industry forever; introducing us to extraordinary characters with very ordinary fears, hopes and dreams.
Stan Lee created X-Men, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Avengers along with multiple other superheroes that made Marvel Comics a success. After graduating at 16, he began working for Timely Comics, which eventually became Marvel, and was promoted to editor in 1942. Stan Lee’s drawings showed the heroes on a human level, conveying their emotion and vulnerabilities; this was uncommon practice at the time.
In 1961, he created the Fantastic Four with Jack Kirby, cementing Marvel’s place in the comic world. The worth of Stan Lee’s paintings continues to increase, along with the value of first editions of his famous comic books. Stan Lee’s drawings are world renowned, and in 2008 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts for his contribution to art.
