Following a childhood spent roaming the forests of a North East coal mining village, his affinity with nature is evident in every instinctive paint drip and brushstroke. Immersing himself in pop surrealism, Robert presents viewers with what he calls ‘psychedelic natural history’.
“When I created this body of work, I wanted to take natural history painting in a new direction, I had been committed to natural history painting for 20 years and needed to find my own voice in a genre which is all technique and little imagination. My work is in part about my history in wildlife art and then deconstructing it – washing it away to reveal another way of conveying wildlife for myself.”
“I love the freedom and brutality of nature, but I don’t like what we as humans are doing to it. My art is a way of exploring and exposing this.”
As an animal-lover, he has recently worked on projects with The Big Cat Sanctuary and the National K9 Memorial to raise money for specific projects.
