David Le Batard (1972-2023), widely known as Lebo, was a Cuban-American artist born in New York City in 1972 to Cuban immigrant parents. Raised in South Florida, he grew up immersed in Cuban art, music, and cultural storytelling, all of which profoundly shaped his creative sensibilities. From an early age, Lebo demonstrated a fascination with cartoons, comic strips, and visual storytelling, developing a distinctive style that combined humor, narrative, and vibrant color. His youth was marked by a passionate self-directed study of art, exploring ancient brush techniques, calligraphy, and classical cartoon drawing.

Lebo graduated from Florida International University in 1995 and subsequently undertook residency at the International Museum of Cartoon Art in Boca Raton, Florida, where he lectured on illustration techniques. It was during this period that he discovered the dynamic synergy of creating art in social and musical environments, painting alongside friends’ bands and integrating the energy of live music into his visual compositions.

Throughout his career, Lebo pioneered what he called Postmodern Cartoon Expressionism, a style that fuses abstract imagery, bold hues, narrative calligraphy, indigenous art, and mythological symbolism. His works are infused with cross-cultural references and historical storytelling, reflecting a philosophy that links contemporary life to the continuity of history. Lebo often incorporated animals, symbols, and whimsical motifs, creating accessible yet intellectually rich narratives that engage viewers on multiple levels.

He gained international recognition for his murals, live-art performances, and limited edition prints, with works commissioned for major brands including Ferrari, Adidas, Sony, Google, and the Norwegian Getaway cruise ship. Lebo’s art is also held in the permanent collections of Bacardi USA, Universal Music Group, and other private and corporate collectors worldwide.

Lebo’s legacy extends beyond his aesthetic achievements; he championed the joy of art, blending playfulness with technical mastery and storytelling. His works continue to inspire collectors and audiences, standing as a testament to his ability to merge cultural heritage, contemporary expression, and universal human emotion in a unique and lasting visual language.
