Chris Orr’s Little Damascus I captures the lively chaos of an ancient port, teeming with ships and framed by grand architecture. The blend of detailed buildings and dynamic water and ship forms showcases Orr’s skill in combining precision with spontaneity. The monochromatic ink strokes create a striking light-and-shadow contrast, evoking a timeless, etched quality. This choice enhances the historical feel and invites exploration of the bustling harbor. Orr’s composition guides the eye across the canvas, sparking curiosity about the lives and stories within. Little Damascus I is a powerful blend of realism and fantasy, drawing viewers into a world both familiar and exotic, and stands as a striking addition to any collection.

Chris Orr RA (b. 1943) is a British artist and master printmaker. Orr’s richly detailed works blend storytelling with satire,  known for its humorous, observational, and narrative-driven approach. His scenes are often bustling with characters, objects, and text, packed with visual jokes and hidden stories. Drawing from both social commentary and the absurd, his style blends traditional draftsmanship with a uniquely British eccentricity.

Working primarily in etching, lithography, and drawing, Orr explores the quirks of modern life with wit and complexity. A Royal Academician and former Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, his work is held in major collections including the Tate and the British Museum.
