Tom MacDonald

Tom MacDonald (1934–2011) was a Sunderland-born artist best known for his distinctive watercolours capturing the landscapes and townscapes of the North East of England, Yorkshire, and the Cotswolds. He studied at Sunderland College of Art under Frank Wood, then worked as a commercial artist in London before returning to Newcastle upon Tyne, where he established his own graphic design studio. His work has been exhibited at respected venues including the Laing Art Gallery, the Hatton Gallery, and the University of Northumbria Art Gallery. MacDonald’s paintings often depict well-known local scenes such as Newcastle’s quayside, Grainger Street, and Corbridge, and are noted for their clear lines, subtle colour palette, and regional charm.
