John Mackie
The joy that John Mackie takes in his art is evident to all who view his work, reflecting the dedication he has had to his craft since childhood. Born in Glasgow in 1953, Mackie first fell in love with art when he discovered his uncle’s sketchbook. He taught himself using art books from his school library, even crafting makeshift paintbrushes from matchsticks with chewed ends.
His talent earned him a place at art college, though his working-class background and limited finances set him apart from many of his classmates. These challenges fostered a resourcefulness and resolve that led to him being awarded a traveling scholarship, taking him from Glasgow to the US and Canada.
After his studies, Mackie continued to travel, spending time in Italy and France, where he immersed himself in new sights and inspiration. He made it a point to continue painting on the street, just as he had during his early learning, to truly capture the scenes, light, color, and movement around him.
Today, Mackie continues to draw inspiration from the world around him, constantly seeking new subjects for his work. His art is renowned and sought after worldwide.
