Christopher Hughes

Christopher Hughes (b. 1955) is a British artist recognized for his detailed traditional works in

watercolour, oil, and porcelain. He began his career with a formal apprenticeship at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company after studying at Swansea University, becoming one of their leading painters. His subjects, such as highland cattle, game birds, and richly rendered fruit still lifes, reflect a classical English aesthetic and show the influence of notable artists like William Powell, James Stinton, and Archibald Thorburn. Since becoming a freelance artist in 1980, Hughes has broadened his practice to include original works on paper and canvas, exhibiting and selling internationally. Based in Worcestershire, he continues to paint, teach, and sell directly from his studio.

In the primary market, Hughes’s framed original watercolours typically sell for £250–£500, depending on size and subject matter. However, on the secondary market, resale values vary significantly. Auction and online sales data show that most framed watercolours fall in the £100–£150 range at auction, while  well-presented private listings can reach £125–£200. Smaller or less detailed pieces, especially if unframed or prints, may sell for considerably less.
