Barry Leighton-Jones

Barry Leighton-Jones (1932–2011) was a British artist celebrated for his lively and character-driven paintings, particularly those centered on children in theatrical or role-playing scenarios. A descendant of the Victorian painter Lord Frederic Leighton, he studied at Sidcup School of Art and Brighton College before building a successful international career. Though known for his Emmett Kelly clown series and other themed collections, Leighton-Jones’ most enduring works are his “Urchin” paintings, captivating portraits of children in adult roles, rendered with both humour and pathos. These expressive oils, often featuring oversized costumes and wistful expressions, capture a nostalgic view of childhood imagination and have become a signature motif in his body of work.
