Sherree Valentine Daines has been called the face of British impressionism. A bold claim to some, but it is a title she has more than earned through her dedication to traditional skills while maintaining an ability to adapt and thrive in the contemporary art world.
Sherree’s paintings have often been compared with the original Impressionists, particularly Renoir and Monet. The links between Sherree’s style and those of the first impressionists is undeniable, particularly when it comes to her use of light and shadow, the elements for which she is perhaps best known. Like many of those who originated this style, Sherree uses light as its own presence within a painting, allowing each moment she captures to appear transitory and fleeting, a glimpse into another world that lasts only a second.
The subjects that Sherree favours often add to this effect of transportive nostalgia. She is certainly known for her use of timeless subjects – such as children playing on white sand beaches, drenched in sun, or well-dressed couples crowding together to view the races at Ascot. Many of her scenes are set in the past, often at some point in the 20th century. Period clothing and objects hint at bygone times, while bold, shimmering light and rich shadow invite the viewer to step into the world she has brought back to life.
Sherree’s career often seems to hold elements of the same timelessness that is so easily identifiable in her work; for example, with the young heroine discovering her passion and ability for art after starting off in a staid job as a legal secretary. Sherree has recalled sketching figures and scenic observations on her legal pads, eventually realising that she had a calling away from a safe and predictable life behind a desk. After several years spent honing skills learned from the masters of Western canon, Sherree moved to Cornwall, continuing to develop her style under its open skies and heady sunshine. Her first exhibition, a financial risk for a young artist who had to borrow funds just to frame her work, was a runaway success, allowing Sherree to leave her day job and step into the life of a professional artist. Through her effort and energy, Sherree became as much the protagonist of her own tale as the figures she captures in her artwork.
Sherree’s masterful style has gained her attention in popular media – she has famously painted a number of celebrities, including members of the royal family, politicians and sports stars. Her work has had the opportunity to reach a vast audience through displays at world-famous institutions such as the Barbican and the Tate Gallery. She has also exhibited through a number of exclusive art societies, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Watercolour Society, the National Society of Painters, and the New English Art Club, and has been voted the UK’s leading Modern Impressionist.
With her work now held in high-profile collections around the world, and with so many incredible accolades to her name, Sherree Valentine Daines is now one of the most collected artists in the UK. The value of her original paintings has seen incredible increase over the course of her career, and there is now an active market for her limited edition prints as well.
