Autumn Design Trends: Choosing your Art
Although it signals the end of summer, Autumn feels like a fresh start for many. As the weather gets colder and the nights arrive sooner, we often take this opportunity to bring our gaze inward, planning more in and around the home.
One big part of this is making season changes to your interior design. Even a few small tweaks can give the space a feeling of cosiness, so you find yourself looking forward to the long evenings inside.
Choosing the right art to complement your interior always makes a huge difference, and we have spoken to a number of collectors who have specific seasonal artworks that they swap out as the weather changes. With that in mind, we thought we’d offer our take on which artworks might work with some of our favourite Autumn design trends…
A Feast for the Senses
Changing the scents within your home is a sure way to start bringing in an Autumnal energy. Scented candles are often the first Autumn buy of the season, with dark, sharp scents like cinnamon and bergamot being preferred. It’s also time to start celebrating the joys that food and drink can bring to the colder seasons, which you might do by displaying a set of beautiful glasses and a decanter in the kitchen, or perhaps setting up a cocktail shelf or trolley in your living room.
Artworks featuring food and drinks are a delightful addition to this effort. Still lifes such as those by Javier Mulio are a classic choice, and even better if you can find one that features a favourite food or drink of your own.
Mood Lighting
One way to really lean into an autumn atmosphere is to embrace the different lighting that comes with longer evenings and winter weather. Adding a few more lamps into a bedroom or living room gives you multiple light points, and feels much cosier than overhead lighting. And, of course, you may have already bought your scented candles…
Moody artworks that will show softly against the dimmer lighting are perfect for this. We love Fabian Perez’s rich, dimly lit interior scenes for this; the darker colours will fall back in the dimmer light, and the highlighted areas will feel all the more present and evocative.
Nature Lovers
Bringing natural tones into the home is a classic for an Autumn design shake-up. Brown is a beautiful choice, particularly if you can bring in multiple shades and include some warmer tones like sienna. Natural textures and materials can add to this, such as carved wooden décor items or wool rugs.
Landscape artwork works perfectly for this preference. The obvious choice is an autumn scene – and there’s no rule against keeping it up all year round. However, any artwork with plants or animals can add to this design choice.
Boho Chic
Layering is an instant way to give your home an Autumn feeling. Try multiple throw blankets draped on your sofas, armchairs or even your bed, in different colours and textures. This can also give a space a bit of a boho air.
To lean into this, look for artwork that has a free and breezy feel to it, perhaps something with expressive lines or brushwork. Bob Dylan’s Drawn Blank series works wonderfully with this style.
Sculptures can also be a superb addition to a bohemian-styled space, as they add another dimension to the carefree appearance of the space. Metal sculptures such as those by Lorenzo Quinn can be a perfect fit, particularly if you have other mixed metal tones in the space.
Jewel Tones
While neutral tones are all the rage at the moment, many still prefer colour, and Autumn can be a great chance to indulge in your favourite jewel tones. You can bring these into any throw blankets or pillows you have chosen, or into seasonal décor items like a lampshade. For a bigger impact, try changing your curtains or blinds for something in deep teal, dark plum, or forest green…
Rich, sumptuous artworks can add to the sensual feeling of these colours. We like Anna Razumovskaya’s classically extravagant figurative works, in heavy frames, to complement deep and bold colour choices.
Find Your Perfect Style
There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to Autumn interior design. There are classic choices which are often preferred, but everyone will find their own way to enjoy the changing season. The most important element to all of the above is celebration; if you lean into the joys of Autumn, the longer evenings and colder air will be something you can intentionally enjoy, rather than something to be dreaded.
