Art, Algorithms & Aladdin’s Caves – Hybrid Working at EzelDotz
At EzelDotz, we know that art never really sits still and neither do we. As a technology-led art brokerage based in Scotland, we’ve embraced hybrid working not only to keep pace with a fast-evolving world but to stay connected to the art and the people behind it.
Most of our team is based in Edinburgh, enjoying the beauty of the city and the buzz of working side by side. But our hybrid model gives us something just as important: flexibility and freedom.
One of our team members commutes weekly from Newcastle to Edinburgh to be with us in person, spending the rest of the week working remotely – coffee in hand, surrounded by art or pets (sometimes both). It’s a rhythm that suits our team, and our clients, too.
Tech at the Core, People at the Heart
Technology sits at the core of EzelDotz. It connects us, whether it’s a virtual catch-up over lunch, a strategic planning session via video, or guiding a client through our valuation tool. Most importantly, it connects us with the people we serve.
Because behind every artwork is a story, and behind every story is someone who might need a little guidance navigating the secondary art market. That’s where we come in.
Flexible, Friendly, Focused
Our hybrid model isn’t just about where we work – it’s about how we work. It allows us to be adaptable in how we support our clients.
Some people are wonderfully tech-savvy and happy to upload images and details through our portal. Others prefer a more personal approach – a phone call, a video chat, or even a visit over a cuppa at the kitchen table.
For those with larger collections or who find technology daunting, we’re happy to go the extra mile (literally). After a consultation, we often arrange in-person visits to help sort and photograph pieces, discuss valuations, and plan next steps.
An Afternoon in an Aladdin’s Cave
Take a recent visit by our COO, Gilly Tallantyre, to a client with a lifelong collection of art gathered during years spent living and working abroad.
From the moment she stepped through the door, she was greeted with tea, homemade cake, and stories. The house itself was a treasure trove – windows swagged in elegant fabric, the scent of fresh garden roses, and staircases winding through decades of memories.
On the walls: artwork of every era and size, each with a story. Gilly spent the afternoon listening, photographing, and gently guiding the client through the valuation process, one artwork, one chapter at a time.
Later, she returned to her desk (with a notebook full of notes and a tummy full of cake) to continue the valuation work, drawing on experience and a trusted network of art-world contacts to identify key pieces and assess market potential.
What We’re (Not) About
Many of our clients come to us with a story and a hope. Some have inherited a collection. Others are downsizing. Some are lifelong collectors looking to refine their walls. Others are simply ready to let go of something meaningful.
Let’s be honest: the secondary art market isn’t always glamorous. And it’s rarely fast.
Unlike auction houses, where spectacle rules, or platforms like eBay where fine art awkwardly sits beside camping gear and used kettles, EzelDotz offers a calm, careful, and considered approach. We focus on finding the right homes for quality pieces – not just any buyer.
We don’t promise overnight success. But we do promise care, attention, and access to a community of buyers actively seeking meaningful, mid- to high-value art.
The Buyers Matter Too
Just as important as our sellers are our buyers – collectors, decorators, or simply art lovers looking for that perfect piece. They rely on us to make sure what they’re buying is authentic, accurately described, and thoughtfully presented.
Every piece we list goes through due diligence. We check condition reports, review images, and answer buyer questions clearly and promptly. Buyers are encouraged to ask anything – and they do!
We’re always happy to help. Because confidence is key when investing in art.
And if they change their minds? Every purchase comes with a 14-day cooling-off period, just to be sure. Most of the time, the only surprise is how much they love their new piece.
One recent favourite? A Bob Dylan artwork that journeyed from the UK to a delighted buyer in Germany. Art travelling not just across borders, but into new lives.
Human at Heart
We’re proud of the tech we’ve built – it allows us to connect people and collections from across the country, and sometimes beyond. But at the heart of EzelDotz is our team.
We’re approachable, down-to-earth, and deeply passionate about what we do. Whether it’s a contractor dialing in from a remote studio or a client uploading artwork from their living room, we’re always just a call, message, or visit away.
Hybrid working gives us flexibility, but it never replaces the value of presence – whether that’s our weekly Edinburgh team huddle, a Newcastle commuter check-in, or a shared slice of Victoria sponge on a velvet sofa.
Your Art, Our Support
Selling (or buying) art can feel daunting, especially when pieces carry emotional value or uncertain worth. Our role is to make the journey simpler, more transparent, and far more personal.
From initial consultation to final sale, whether over Zoom or tea, we’re with you each step of the way.
We’re not just building a platform. We’re building relationships, one conversation and one collection at a time. Hybrid working isn’t just a logistical solution. It’s how we blend technology with empathy, and efficiency with personal service.
