Fabian Perez is known for the richly dramatic world he has created through paintings inspired by his own life and passions. His upbringing in Buenos Aires can be traced through nostalgic nightclub scenes, brimming with well-dressed men and women; his time in Japan can be seen in portraits of contemporary Geishas.
Most Fabian Perez art collectors have their own favourite flavour of Fabian’s work, and some even have their favourite ‘characters’ within Fabian’s world. And when one of our collectors wants to get to know this world a little better, we recommend an exploration of Fabian’s different series, each one with its own unique theme and feel.
Characters of the Night
Fabian’s series of ‘characters of the night’ artworks is directly inspired by his fascinating youth in Buenos Aires, and his romanticised memories of the men and women who would frequent his parents’ nightclubs.
Women lounge confidently on armchairs, men lean casually on street corners as they light their cigarettes. These scenes often appear as though out of a classic Hollywood film, complete with artful lighting and hints at a larger narrative below the surface.
Balconies
This series is also connected to Fabian’s love for his hometown, as he associates many of his memories of Buenos Aires with the balconies that are so often seen in the city. Offering a public view of a private domicile, the balcony is a link between the home and the street; Fabian uses this to bring female figures in soft bedroom attire into the open spaces beyond their windows.
Dancers
Fabian’s dancing scenes depict figures in mid-move as they perform a passionate tango or flamenco. Fabian does not shy away from deep, dramatic poses, using his knowledge of each dance to place the dancing couple – or solo dancer – in exactly the right position.
Toasts
Some of Fabian’s most popular works are built around this simple concept: a group of people raising a glass together. These works feature different drinks, different hands, and the suggestion of varying locations. However, the focus is always on the moment of connection between those about to share in that most basic of pleasures, a drink with friends.
Geishas
Inspired by the time he lived in Japan, Fabian’s series of Geisha artworks focus on the art of the Geisha: the careful performance that includes thousands of years of tradition as well as individual training. Often portrayed as though caught in a candid moment, these Geisha works frequently have a ‘behind-the-scenes’ feeling to them, hinting at the link between real life and performance.
Romance
This striking series includes figures that the audience might recognise as ‘characters of the night.’ However, in these works, Fabian focuses on capturing a moment in time, often with the couple seen in mid-embrace, with light and shadow carefully worked to suggest movement. Some are warm and comforting, others sweetly tragic as the couple appears to say farewell.
Celebrity Portraits
Known as the ‘Living Legends’ series, this collection includes portraits of contemporary figures whom Fabian admires for their contributions to their fields. This has included a wide range of personalities, from Roger Federer to Lady Gaga, and even the Pope.
Music
In this series, Fabian pays particular attention to his love of the guitar and its presence at the parties he has always loved. He has also created works featuring the musical nomads he remembers from his childhood, often breaking away from his usual shadowed style to capture these colourful characters in the bright light of his memories.
Places
There are a couple of locations that Fabian has used as a basis for specific collections of work. His Venice collection, for example, includes a series of Masque portraits filled with ostentatious characters and costumes. Fabian has also paid tribute to his beloved Ceilo with a series of sun-drenched works centred around horse riding and bullfighting.
