Nick Morris (b. 1966, Ballarat, Australia) is a contemporary artist celebrated for his vibrant, often provocative mixed-media works that merge surf culture, street art, and pop-cultural references. At the age of six, Morris knew he wanted to be an artist, but after being told the odds of making a living in art were slim, he pursued graphic design instead. He studied at Chisholm Institute in Caulfield, where he met long-time collaborator Dave Bowers.
After working in Melbourne, Morris moved to Victoria’s west coast, and in 1990 co-founded the clothing label Umgawa, fusing his love of surf and streetwear. This was followed by a role as Art Director at Quiksilver in Torquay, an industry dream job that allowed him to combine creativity and coastal living. He later launched Anyhow, a freelance graphics company servicing global surf and streetwear brands. By the early 2000s, however, Morris felt the industry’s creative spark fading.
A chance invitation to participate in a local exhibition reignited his passion for fine art. Inspired by Andy Warhol and armed with screen-printing skills learned through his graphics business, he began creating bold, layered canvases. Working alongside Bowers, he staged his first major exhibition in Melbourne in 2007, which sold out, leading to further successful solo and joint shows including sell-outs at Art Sydney and international exhibitions in France and Hong Kong.
Morris’s work often explores cultural nostalgia, advertising iconography, and social commentary, layered with vivid colour, text, and imagery. He has maintained strong connections with surf and streetwear subcultures, having designed for Stussy, Mambo, and Mossimo. Today, his work continues to attract collectors seeking dynamic, conversation-starting pieces with a distinctly urban edge.
