Art in Motion: Contributing to the Scottish Circular Economy

01 Aug 2025

At the heart of our platform is a simple belief: pre-owned does not mean second best. By giving high-quality artworks a second life, we are not just helping collectors discover new treasures. We are doing so in an environmentally responsible way, as all businesses should. With hybrid working, direct shipping from seller to buyer, and by keeping artworks circulating through attractive resale options, we naturally keep our carbon footprint low.

However, we recognise there is more to do. That is why we have aligned with Scotland’s Net Zero 2045 target.

As a business based in Edinburgh, we have tailored our goals with this ambition, taking meaningful steps across our daily operations to meet both our own and Scotland’s climate commitments. You can learn more on the Scottish Enterprise website.

What is Net Zero (and Why Does It Matter for Art?)

Even though resale is naturally lower-carbon, we recognise it still leaves a footprint. That’s why we’ve built a clear plan to track, reduce and balance our impact as we scale. Net Zero means cutting emissions as much as possible, then removing what’s left to bring our total impact to zero.

Our (Artfully Curated) Net Zero Game Plan

The plan, explained simply, is ‘Cut What We Can. Offset What We Must.’

We calculate our baseline emissions to understand where we currently stand, giving us insight into areas with potential for improvement, especially in shipping and packaging, where we are exploring more sustainable materials and methods to reduce our environmental impact.

Behind every art sale is a spreadsheet assessing energy use, emissions factors and weight-based formulas, sourcing reputable sources like Idemat 2023 to get it right. For unavoidable emissions, such as international air freight, we will invest in verified carbon removals as part of our long-term commitment to net zero.

Net Zero is not a straight path, and we are navigating some challenges:

  • More sales means more emissions. Scaling responsibly is key.

  • Data gaps remain. We are working with advisors to improve accuracy.

  • Low carbon shipping options are limited. We make the best choices available while advocating for better solutions.
